Skin checks

It is recommended, that skin check is performed “head to toe” to avoid missing a skin cancer. Often the spot of concern to the patient is not the cancer they have. Typically, checks take between 15 and 30min, depending on condition of your skin. No cream or make-up, please.

Surgical excisions

If the suspicious spot on your skin is coloured or if the biopsy confirms skin cancer, then removal of the entire lesion is required. This can be done in the clinic under local anaesthetic. The skin is then repaired with the stitches, which have to be kept dry for 48hrs. The stiches are removed between 7 and 14 days after and the pathology result is given.

Diagnostic (punch) biopsies

It is sometimes necessary to sample a skin lesion to confirm it’s nature and plan further treatment. Punch biopsy removes 3 or 4mm circle under local anaesthetic injection and no sutures are required. The wound has to be kept dry for 48hrs. The result is available within a week.

Non-surgical treatment

It is sometimes best to treat sun cancers or pre-cancerous lesion using cryotherapy (freezing with liquid nitrogen) or up to 6 weeks of cream, such as Aldara (for BCCs - Basal Sell Carcinomas) or Efudix (for Bowen’s disease - precursor to SCCs - Squamous Cell Carcinomas). These treatments work by removing/peeling layers of skin affected by cancer.
